A Story-driven Board Game

How is such a lovingly crafted ''Ganzenbord'' produced? The process commences with a conceptualization, serving as the foundation of the idea. However, the design, production, assembly, and transportation of such a product do not occur effortlessly. How many steps lie in between, and what challenges arise in the creation of such a traditional game?

From Idea to Market

The inception of the project starts at the conceptual phase. In this instance, Berrefonds introduced the unique idea of creating a 'compassionate' game of goose that resonates with the theme of loss. How will we elaborate on this concept? Within the organization, deliberations commenced on the diverse requirements of both the goose game and its design. What are the essential elements needed for developing a board game and what factors must be taken into consideration? The core components of a goose game consist of: A game box, The game board, The game rules, Dice, Pawns, Any additional components. With these fundamental elements established, the next steps involve finalizing the dimensions, determining the paper and cardboard types, and initiating the production process. It presents an intriguing challenge to undertake in collaboration with our Dutch partner, Van Vliet Verpakkingen, specializing in packaging solutions. Through consultations with them, we, at IPP Printers, in conjunction with Berrefonds, have assessed the most economically viable dimensions and a realistically achievable production timeline amidst the tumultuous paper market conditions.

Made in Holland

The design, a crucial aspect not to be overlooked. In this regard, a production drawing is created by the packaging supplier. The production drawing serves as a blueprint of the flat design, outlining the printing process carried out by Roelofs Printing (based in the Netherlands). It can be viewed as a framework of the product in its flat form. It is imperative to consider fold lines, adhesive edges, and, of course, the bleed. Once the design is finalized, it undergoes scrutiny by IPP Printers, the printing press, and the packaging supplier, Van Vliet Packaging, ensuring the design is print-ready with no challenges in assembling the final product. Assembling marks the concluding stage where the ultimate product takes shape, literally forming into a board game. The printing press has delivered the printed sheets, and the game pieces and dice have also arrived. Now, it is a matter of setting up the cartoning machines, a task meticulously performed by seasoned specialists with years of expertise.
